BUT.I think Photoshop for photographers is vastly different than for Graphic Artists. After a year or so, I realized that I had a fair understanding of what it would take to get what I wanted out of my photos. Carried a camera with me everyday, edited at least one photo every night. got ignored or slammed by the regulars, took any crumb of advice anyone would adually my photography and editing started gaining some positive comments. I went through a hundred tutorials, couldn't wrap my head around layers, started posting images to DPReview. In the early 00's I was going to buy a DSLR, but a graphic artist I was working with told me to buy a less expensive camera and pay for Photoshop. Like I discover a new method to do an effect in 5 clicks when I had been doing it in 25 clicks for the past 5 years. So it was just lots and lots of projects, like taking an image from the web and trying to re-create it and if I couldn't figure out how to do some effects, I would just try to google the method.īeen using Photoshop now for around 7 years I think, but haven't really been advancing my knowledge for the past 3 or so, I can basically do what ever I like on Photoshop (except draw or 3D) but I occasionally learn that the way I used to do things isn't the most effective way. Did a few follow-along tutorials with that as well, but it was a lot easier since the basic structure is the same. When I got good at GIMP I noticed it didn't have many tools that I knew Photoshop did, so I switched over. Since I've only focused on certain skills that I liked, I've mastered a few capabilities while still having some stuff I didn't even know existed. Just straight at making stuff I know I like to make in the future. I didn't start with the "basics" first or the type of guides where you go step by step through every tool in the software. I would take tutorials on how to create an image or a manipulation or something. I stared seeing some cool custom movie posters people had made and wanted to give a go, I downloaded GIMP first.
